Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Egypt, with a trip also to Brazil for the young protagonists of the FIP Promises circuit. What just ended was a memorable weekend for the CUPRA FIP Tour, the circuit of the International Padel Federation. The first FIP Gold of the season was played in Paredes (Portugal), but also two FIP Silver (in Valencia, Spain, and in Beheira, Egypt) and two FIP Bronze, one in Gothenburg (Sweden) with men and women on court and another women’s in Beheira, linked to the FIP Silver. A total of 367 pairs registered for the CUPRA FIP Tour tournaments, with a total of 734 players, with 226 men’s pairs and 141 women’s pairs from all over the world competing in front of a large crowd, who filled the stands of the clubs hosting the tournaments. In Portugal, all eyes were on ‘Tolito’ Aguirre and Gonza Alfonso, two of the most spectacular players on the circuit, who entertained the fans and took home the title at the end of a comeback in the final against home idols Nuno and Miguel Deus.
While Aguirre and Alfonso hope to enter the FIP ranking elite soon, there are many big names who have participated in and won tournaments on the CUPRA FIP Tour: in Paredes, in the women’s draw, Giorgia Marchetti (47) and Sara Ruiz Soto (31) triumphed, while in Valencia it was party time for Carolina Orsi (29) – who with Marchetti won the European Games in Krakow in 2023 and last year was vice European champion in Cagliari – and Nuria Rodriguez (25). Italian success also in the FIP Silver in Egypt, with Marco Cassetta (back in the top 100, now at number 98) paired with José Luis Gonzalez (97), and in the FIP Silver in Valencia, where young Enzo Jensen (born in 2006, Claudia’s brother) won his first professional title paired with Spaniard Boris Castro. And speaking about NextGen, there was also celebration for Leti Manquillo (63) in the Egyptian FIP Bronze with Patri Martinez (51) and for Adam Axelsson, the great hope of Swedish padel, who paired with the expert Simon Vasquez triumphed in Gothenburg, where in the women’s draw came the success of another very young player, Ana Dominguez (79, with the Frenchwoman Carla Touly). Talents we will hear about for a long time.
