Men’s day 1. Argentina and Spain, winning debut. Brazil also ok
October 28, 2024An exciting day 1 in the men’s draw at the FIP World Padel Championships. At the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha, it was immediately a show: the last tie to be concluded, between France and Uruguay, was the most uncertain, with the final success of the Bleus (2-1) thanks to Guichard/Vives, after the first point had been conquered by Bergeron/Fonteny thanks to a 6-3 6-0 win over Jimenez/Ilarida and the momentary draw by Ramos/Araujo de Lizarza. In the other Group C match, 3-0 by Chile to hosts Qatar.
The other match that kept everyone in suspense was the Group D one between Brazil and Sweden. After Olsson/Rutgersson’s two-set (7-6 6-3) victory over Da Cunha/Rodrigues, Seleçao signed the comeback thanks to Julianoti/Bergamini and Campagnolo/De Avila Simonato, the latter thanks to a 6-7 6-2 6-4 win over Appelgren-Frost. In the same group, 3-0 by Portugal over the Netherlands thanks to victories by the Deus brothers, Perry/Fazendeiro and Araujo/Luque.
Three victories also for the two finalists of the 2022 edition. In Group A, 3-0 by world champion Argentina over Italy thanks to Tapia/Chingotto, Stupaczuk/Libaak and Di Nenno/Augsburger; in Group B, 3-0 by Spain over Mexico with wins by Lebron/Yanguas, Navarro/Coello and Galan/Ruiz. Along with Argentina, in Group A, Belgium also won over the United States (2-1); in Group B, however, a comeback victory (2-1) by the United Arab Emirates over Paraguay with wins by Ayats/Jurado and Icardo/Jofre.
On Tuesday, not before 6 p.m. local time (4 p.m. CET), everyone is back on court: Belgium-Italy, on centre court, may already be decisive. Eyes also on Spain-Arab Emirates and Portugal-Sweden.
