Lyon, Day 2: The tournament gets into full swing: a surprise quarter-final in the men’s draw
October 12, 2024At the Palais des Sports in Lyon, the FIP Gold gets into full swing. After Friday’s day reserved for the round of 16, the quarters of both the men’s and women’s draw will be played today (starting at 1 p.m.); the women will then come back to the court for the semi-finals not before 6 p.m.. Among the men, six of the top eight seeds are still in the running: the surprise quarter-final will be the one at the top of the draw and will feature qualifiers Carlos Perez Cabeza and Adrian Ronco and lucky losers Pablo Castillo and Candido Alfaro, who beat Cepero/Benitez (9) and Del Castillo/Vilariño respectively. The other challenges will be Ruiz/Arroyo-Guerrero/Bautista, Rubio/Lijo-Garcia/Diestro and Fernandez/Jimenez

In the women’s draw, on the other hand, the march of Ale Alonso and Andrea Ustero continues, who after 6-2 7-6 to Agueda Perez and Raquel Segura will face Araceli Martinez and Alix Collombon. At the bottom half, however, there was the withdrawal of Ksenia Sharifova and Lucia Martinez Gomez, with Martina Fassio (called up by Argentina for the FIP World Padel Championships in Doha) and Raquel Eugenio in the quarters against Marta Talavan and Julieta Bidahorria. Las Heras/Marrero-Orsi/Rodriguez and Caldera/Rufo-Guinart-Iglesias the other quarters.
