Day 3: Esbri and Bergamini did it again. Chozas and Augsburger advance
September 19, 2024Juanlu Esbri and Lucas Bergamini had already beaten Mike Yanguas and Franco Stupaczuk in Madrid. They did it again, in the round of 16 of the Oysho Valladolid Premier Padel P2, and always in three sets as it had happened in the Spanish capital. At the Polideportivo Pisuerga, it ended 6-4 2-6 7-6 in one hour and 58 minutes, a result that propels one of the new pairs in this second part of the season to the quarter-finals, where tomorrow will be the challenge against Pablo Cardona and Paquito Navarro (5), who defeated Lucas Campagnolo and Javi Leal 6-4 7-6. Alex Chozas and Leo Augsburger also continue to collect good results, who again in three sets (6-1 3-6 7-6) eliminated the number 6 seed Alex Ruiz and Javi Garrido. For the two Argentines, tomorrow’s quarters against Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan (2), ahead 7-6 6-3 over Rafa Mendez and Javi Rico. At the top half, however, Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia’s 6-4 6-4 win over Gonzalo Rubio and Pablo Lijo; the number 1 on the scoreboard on Friday awaits Coki Nieto and Jon Sanz (7), qualified thanks to a 6-3 double over Nachi Sager and Salva Oria. The other quarter-final will be between Martin Di Nenno and Juan Lebron (3), who needed three sets (6-3 3-6 6-3) to eliminate Fran Guerrero and Jairo Bautista, and the pair formed by Momo Gonzalez and Edu Alonso, victorious 6-3 7-5 over Tino Libaak and Victor Ruiz.
WOMEN In the women’s draw, good debuts by the winners of three of the last four Premier Padel tournaments. Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez overcame Araceli Martinez and Alix Collombon 6-0 6-1. In the quarters, for the number 1 seed, there is Ana Catarina Nogueira and Claudia Jensen (8), who defeated Ksenia Sharifova and Lucia Martinez Gomez 6-2 6-4. Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez (2) gave up two games to Marta Borrero and Martina Calvo (6-0 6-2), with Marta Ortega and Sofia Araujo (3) getting the better of Virginia Riera and Carmen Goenaga 6-0 7-6. For Triay/Fernandez, in the quarters, there are Lucia Sainz and Patty Llaguno (6-3 6-4 to Talavan/Bidahorria); Ortega/Araujo will instead face Lorena Rufo and Bea Caldera (6-4 3-6 7-5 to Guinart/Iglesias). Among the top four seeded pairs, Delfi Brea and Andrea Ustero – making their debut together – were the ones who suffered the most, before beating qualifiers Lara Arruabarrena and Julia Polo 4-6 6-0 6-3: in the quarters, the duel against the two home players, Melania Merino and Esther Carnicero, who, thanks to a 6-3 2-6 6-2 win over Carolina Orsi and Nuria Rodriguez, will dream again.
