Six months of Premier Padel: Chingotto and Galán soar, Coello-Tapia lead
July 10, 2024With the Genoa P2, the first part of the Premier Padel season has concluded, with 12 tournaments played out of a total of 24 plus the Finals in December. But which players and pairs have performed best in this first phase?
In the men’s category, the world’s number 1 pair, Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia, have achieved the highest score since the beginning of the year (8180 points in the Race ranking) thanks to their 5 victories (including one Major and two P1s) and as many finals lost.
They have won 47 of the 53 matches played (88.7%) and the highest number of consecutive wins, a total of 18 (between March and April, they won 3 consecutive tournaments: Qatar Major, Acapulco P1, and Puerto Cabello P2, with their streak ending in the Brussels P2 final).
The Spaniard has maintained his position as number 1 in the ranking since the start of the year, while the Argentine has gained 3 positions, moving from sixth to third place.
A great start to the season also for Ale Galán, who since the Puerto Cabello tournament has been pairing with Federico Chingotto after starting the season with Juan Lebrón.
The Spaniard, although preceded in points in the Race (7480 points) by the n°1s, is the one who has won the most tournaments (already 6, one with Lebrón and 5 with Chingotto) and has the highest percentage of matches won (90.2% with 46 victories in 51 matches played). Since he has been with Chingotto, they are the most successful pair in the circuit with 5 victories and 3 finals in 8 tournaments played together.
For the Argentine, it is a first part of the season to remember, as he has gained 4 positions since the beginning of the year, moving from eighth to fourth place (his best position ever). Federico is the player with the best percentage of games won out of the total games played (62.5% with 579 games won and 347 lost).
In the third step, we have the Superpibes, who with 2970 points each obtained this year are the n°3 pair in the ranking, both having lost 2 positions since the beginning of the year. Martín has moved from fourth to sixth place, while Franco from fifth to seventh.
Miki Yanguas (n°10) and Javi Garrido (n°11), in fifth place as a pair, are the duo that has gained the most positions in the top rankings, 10 each, mainly thanks to the final reached at the Doha Major.
At an individual level in the Top 30, Pablo Cardona is the one who has made the biggest jump, gaining 29 positions, moving from 57th to 28th place, while in the Top 100, we have 3 players who have gained 63 positions each; Salvador Oria (from n°106 to 43), Leandro Augsburger (from n°115 to 52), and Valentino Libaak (from n°117 to 54).
In the women’s field, last year’s world number 1s, Paula Josemaría and Ari Sánchez, confirm their lead at the halfway point. The two Spaniards, in addition to having the highest score obtained since the start of the season (7410 points each), have won 4 tournaments, including the 2 Majors held in Doha and Rome and the 2 P1s in Riyadh and Mar del Plata. They also have the highest percentage of victories in matches played (85% with 34 victories in 40 matches) and games won (65.2% with 492 won and 263 lost).
An excellent season also for Delfi Brea (4390 Race points; n°4 in the ranking) and Bea González (4030 Race points; n°5), winners of 4 consecutive P2 tournaments (Puerto Cabello, Brussels, Seville, and Asuncion) with a positive streak of 19 matches won.
Gemma Triay (5280 Race points) maintains her third position in the ranking, pairing with Claudia Fernandez (5190 points; n°7 in the ranking and 17 positions gained since the start of the season), winning both the Santiago P1 and the Bordeaux P2.
In the Top 30, a big leap forward for Ksenia Sharifova to 26th place with 24 positions gained and Andrea Ustero to 19th place (+20 positions), while in the Top 100, the most interesting moves have been those of Alba Gallardo, who had no points last year and is now in 70th place, and Raquel Eugenio Barrera (n°92), who has climbed 128 positions.
