BNL Italy Major Premier Padel, day 6: at the Foro it will be Coello/Tapia against “Chingalan”. Sainz/Llaguno, what a feat
June 22, 2024Arturo Coello/Agustin Tapia vs. Ale Galan/Fede Chingotto in the men’s draw, Ari Sanchez/Paula Josemaria vs. Lucia Sainz/Patty Llaguno in the women’s. These will be the two title matches at BNL Italy Major Premier Padel in Rome, where the semifinals were played today in a packed Foro Italico Centre Court, with more than 7,000 fans for the evening session.
MEN Devastating. There are no other words to define Coello and Tapia, defending champions at Rome Major and number 1 and number 2 in the FIP ranking, respectively: in the semifinal against Paquito Navarro and Juan Lebron (4), they left no chance for their opponents, who managed to keep afloat only in the first set. 6-3 6-1 was the final result in 58 minutes of play, with the second set lasting just 18 minutes: as many as 42 were the winners for Coello and Tapia during the match, 15 more than Navarro and Lebron, who have yet to postpone the appointment with their first final.
Instead, the final was conquered by Galan and Chingotto, who produced a superlative performance against Franco Stupaczuk and Martin Di Nenno. The Superpibes, seeded number 3 in the tournament, had to bow to the overwhelming power of the Chingalan, who in their seventh tournament together won their seventh final (three titles won): 6-2 6-4 the result at the end of an hour and 27 minutes of play. The one in Rome will be the seventh head-to-head of the season between Coello/Tapia and Galan/Chingotto: three wins for each pair, so far.
WOMEN After winning the last two tournaments played, Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez (2) fail to go all the way in Rome. At Foro Italico, Lucia Sainz and Patty Llaguno (8) played a classic perfect match and won 7-5 6-4 in one hour and 48 minutes. Sainz and Llaguno win their first final in a Major, the second of the season after the one they reached a month ago at the Banco de Chile Santiago Premier Padel P1, in which they were defeated by Triay and Fernandez.
On Sunday, on the Centre Court (6.30 p.m.), they will face Ari Sanchez and Paula Josemaria, both No. 1 in the FIP ranking and reaching their second final in a row at Foro Italico. The two Spaniards had to fight and play their best padel to bend the resistance of Jessica Castelló and Claudia Jensen, seeded number 5. After winning the first set 7-6 after saving a set-point, Ari and Paula won 6-4 the second at the end of a two-hour match. This is the fifth final of the season for them: they have taken home three titles so far, including the previous Major in Qatar.
