Betclic Bordeaux Premier Padel P2, Nieto and Sanz champions for the first time. Double for Triay-Fernandez
June 16, 2024The first time for Coki Nieto and Jon Sanz, the second (and consecutive) for Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez. The Betclic Bordeaux Premier Padel P2 has elected its kings and queens, at the end of another great week of padel, which precedes the second Major of the year, the BNL Italy Major Premier Padel starting on Monday at the Foro Italico in Rome. Nieto and Sanz, the number 5 seed in the men’s draw, defeated Momo Gonzalez and Alex Ruiz (3) 6-1 6-4; for Triay/Fernandez (1) a double 7-5 over Marta Ortega and Veronica Virseda.
MEN The first set of the men’s final was had no story, with Nieto and Sanz giving Gonzalez/Ruiz just one game as they made 17 unforced errors; the second one was more balanced, with Nieto and Sanz breaking their opponents in the ninth game and closing out the match soon after. “Thank you very much for coming here – Nieto told the crowd –. Congratulations to our opponents, who are also great friends. Today we played with confidence, determined on what we had prepared: Jon played in a devastating way, for me he is among the best in the world when he expresses himself at his level. I thank those who help us, who stand by us and make all this possible”. “We send the ball that way but behind our play is the whole team – added Sanz –. Today we wanted so much to win this final: I knew there were a lot of people from Pamplona and a lot of friends here to see it. I wanted to do it, I want to dedicate the victory to all of them, to those who help me. I had ups and downs, Coki played a crazy tournament, in the semifinal he made an unforced error in three sets. I had to adapt a bit, I had a few sets where I didn’t play well, but I’m so happy”.
WOMEN If for Nieto and Sanz it is the first title in the Premier Padel circuit, in the women’s draw the same players who had lifted the trophy in Santiago triumphed. Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez, the number 1 seed in Bordeaux, won with a double 7-5 over Marta Ortega and Veronica Virseda, in a final that lasted two hours and 22 minutes. Triay/Fernandez were ahead 5-3 in the first set and 4-0 in the second, but their opponents didn’t give up and gave the Bordeaux crowd a great match. “We are really in a great moment, two titles in a row give us a lot of confidence – the words of Triay, who in two tournaments, like her partner, earned 1,500 points in the FIP ranking –. Congratulations to the opponents, they played a great final. A hug to our families who came to follow us in this special tournament in Bordeaux. In this sport until you close the game nothing is decided and they did well to come back. We are working very well and we are happy with what we are doing”. For Fernandez, almost in tears, a special dedication: “The thought goes to my dog, who died last week. I’m very happy, we are doing hard and intense work: I want to thank Gemma because she always supports me. Today I don’t think I played my best level, I know I can give more, also physically. We are working hard anyway, we deserved this victory”. For Gemma and Claudia, now, route to Rome, where Triay comes in as trophy holder.
