Betclic Bordeaux Premier Padel P2, day 4: Belasteguin, here is the first semifinal in 2024
June 14, 2024Fernando Belasteguin has been world number 1 for 16 years: he has won everything, but a semifinal in the 2024 Premier Padel circuit the Argentine has yet to reach. He did so in the Betclic Bordeaux Premier Padel P2, paired with another Argentine, Juan Tello: the number 1 seed in the tournament at the Arkéa Arena, in the quarters, defeated Javi Rico and Juanlu Esbri in a comeback (4-6 6-4 6-3). Standing between Belasteguin/Tello and the final are Momo Gonzalez and Alex Ruiz (3), who qualified after Alvaro Cepero and Miguel Benitez withdrew in the third set, nevertheless ending a great week that began with the qualifiers. Tello and Ruiz, tomorrow’s opponents not before 6 p.m. CET, also started 2024 together. The other semifinal, at the bottom half of the draw, will see Lucas Bergamini and Pablo Cardona (7), victorious 1-6 6-4 6-1 over Collado/Diestro, and the number 5 pair of Coki Nieto and Jon Sanz, who in the evening earned their third semi-final of the season after Puerto Cabello and Brussels by beating 6-7 6-2 6-3 Goenaga/Ayats.
WOMEN Making the surprise, at least looking at the entry list, in the women’s draw were Lucia Sainz and Patty Llaguno. But considering the magic moment of the two veterans, finalists in Santiago in the last of the three South American tournaments played before Bordeaux, one cannot be surprised by the success of the number 5 in the seeding over Jessica Castelló and Claudia Jensen (3) with a score of 5-7 6-4 6-3 at the end of a three-hour marathon. In the semifinals, for Sainz/Llaguno, there will be a rematch of the Santiago final against Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez (1), who beat Lorena Rufo and Bea Caldera (8) 6-3 6-4 in the quarters. The other semifinal, on the other hand, follow the order of the seeded players: on one side Virginia Riera and Sofia Araujo (4), victorious 6-1 7-6 over Aranzazu Osoro and Marta Marrero (7), and on the other Marta Ortega and Veronica Virseda (2), ahead 6-4 7-6 over Alejandra Alonso and Andrea Ustero (6). This will be the match that will open the semifinal schedule at 12 noon.
