GNP Mexico P1, day 4: Alonso-Ustero, 33 years of age added up and in the semifinals
March 23, 2024Seventeen years one, 16 years the other. Never in the history of the Premier Padel circuit had such a young couple reached the semifinals. History was written by Alejandra Alonso and Andrea Ustero who, beating 6-2 6-2 Aranzazu Osoro and Carmen Goenaga, reached the semifinal of the GNP Mexico P1. Between the Spaniards and the final, there is now only Virginia Riera and Sofia Araujo (6), who defeated 6-4 6-2 Ana Catarina Nogueira and Bea Caldera, who had eliminated world and Acapulco number 1 Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez in the round of 16. At the bottom half, however, Delfina Brea and Bea Gonzalez (2) lived up to the expectations by beating 6-2 6-3 Lucia Sainz and Patty Llaguno. In the semifinals, however, the Argentinean and the Spaniard will not find Triay/Fernandez (3), finalists in Doha, but Jessica Castelló and another very young player, the Argentine Claudia Jensen (7), who after losing the first set in the tiebreak left only four games to their opponents (6-7 6-2 6-2).
MEN In the men’s draw, however, the top four pairs on the GNP Mexico P1 entry list reached the semifinals. If Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia (1), Juan Lebron and Ale Galan (2) and Paquito Navarro and Sanyo Gutierrez (4) finished in two sets, with Lebron and Galan ‘avenging’ the Doha defeat by beating 6-4 6-2 Yanguas/Garrido (7), the ‘Superpibes’ Franco Stupaczuk and Martin Di Nenno (3) were the only ones who needed the deciding set, however, closed 6-0 after conceding 6-4 in the second set.
