Upset in Cagliari: Gonzalez and Garrido out
October 6, 2023FIP PLATINUM Sardegna’s quarter-final day opened with a big upset: the end of the tournament for ‘Momo’ Gonzalez and Javi Garrido, already world champions, by the hands of Francisco Manuel Gil and Ramiro Moyano, the number 5 seed on the draw. Gonzalez and Garrido, number 2 in the seeding, were defeated with a double 6-4 after being down 5-1 in the second set. Gonzalez tried to lead the comeback, but in the end it was Gil and Moyano who celebrated: tomorrow, in the semifinals, the challenge against ‘Coki’ Nieto and Javier Rico (4), who respected the prediction against Brazilian Lucas Campagnolo and Spaniard Juanlu Esbri. A hard-fought quarter-final on the TC Cagliari’s Centre Court, which lasted over two hours and ended 7-6 3-6 6-3.
In the morning and early afternoon sessions of the quarter-finals of the international padel tournament promoted by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, Department of Tourism, Handicrafts and Trade, under the patronage of the Municipality of Cagliari, three of the four semifinalist pairs in the women’s draw were also decided: the first to punch their ticket were Spaniards Marina Martinez Lobo and Nuria Rodriguez (6), who overcame French players Alix Collombon and Lea Godallier 6-4 6-3; tomorrow’s match against Carla Mesa Salazar and Carolina Orsi (7), with the latter winning the little derby against the other Italian player Lorena Vano Martin and Letizia Maria Manquillo Alarza (7-5 6-4). Clear victory (6-1 6-2) for Spainss Beatriz Caldera Sanchez and Portugal’s Ana Caterina Nogueira (8) over Italy’s Giorgia Marchetti and Chiara Pappacena: they now await Guinart/Navarro or Llaguno/Sainz.
