Madrid, triumph for Brea/Gonzalez after cancelling four match-points to Sánchez/Josemaría!
July 23, 2023Delfina Brea and Bea Gonzalez gain in the most incredible way their first triumph in the Premier Padel circuit. The No. 3 seeded pair in the women’s draw overcame the Spanish No. 1 seeded pair, Ari Sánchez and Paula Josemaría, in three sets – 5-7, 7-6, 7-6 – and after three hours and 22 minutes of play and won the Madrid Premier P1. A legendary final, in which the champions cancelled four match-points when Sánchez and Josemaría – at their second loss in a row in a final after the one in the Rome tournament against Gemma Triay and Marta Ortega – thought they had the title in their hands.
Thus, what took place in the Madrid Arena was an incredible, spectacular and exciting match, marked by great balance and with many classy shots. Ari Sánchez and Paula Josemaría managed to win the first set after breaking their opponents in the 11th game and after saving two break points in the 8th game. More unpredictable was the second set, characterized by three breaks in the first three games and with a two-face development. The two Spanish No. 1s ran away 4-1, but Delfi and Bea managed to raise the level of their game (28 winners in this set) and reeled them back in at 4-4. The score followed the services until the inevitable tie-break, which the No. 3 pair deservedly won 7-3 after an hour and 11 minutes of battle.
Great balance and great struggle also in the third set, where no one lost the serve even though four break points were saved. In the second consecutive tie-break, Delfi and Bea prevailed once again, although Sánchez and Josemaría led 6-2 and had four match-points in a row, in the last of which Josemaría failed a smash. Delfi and Bea closed 8-6 unleashing their joy. “I am broken”, smiled Delfina Brea, “Thanks to the fans who pushed us a lot and congratulations to Ari and Paula, they have been dominant this year…we had to run a lot today!”. The closing remarks were for Bea Gonzalez: “An awesome feeling. We experienced all kinds of emotions during the match, thanks to the fans, because it was an unbelievable final”.
