South Africa, Guillermo Lahoz wins in Johannesburg and makes CUPRA FIP Tour history
April 22, 2025
This weekend, Guillermo Lahoz made history in the CUPRA FIP Tour. Born in 1971, he won the FIP Bronze tournament in South Africa and became the oldest player ever to win an international tournament (he will soon turn 54). Lahoz, who used to play with Fernando Belasteguin, has been champion of Spain, Europe, and the world with his Spanish national team. A few years ago, Guillermo moved to South Africa to help develop padel there. In Johannesburg, he broke the previous record set by Mexican player Fabian Mujica, who won the FIP Rise in Houston in May 2021 at the age of 49.
The Spanish player won the title with Portuguese partner Miguel Oliveira, born in 1988, who bounced back after losing the final of the FIP Bronze in Setúbal last week. They won the final with a score of 6-3 6-4 against Albert Roglan and Jan Masferrer.
“I’m incredibly happy and proud to have won the first international FIP tournament in South Africa. This is a moment I will never forget. Thank you, Miguel, for being such a great partner on and off the court – we had so much fun playing together. Thanks also to everyone who came to support us and shared this weekend with us. It was an honor to be part of this historic moment for padel in South Africa. Let’s keep growing this amazing sport together! See you soon,” said Guillermo Lahoz after the win in Johannesburg.
