Puebla, Alonso and Ustero’s first time as a pair. For Andrea, a title with a taste of the Top 10

Ale Alonso and Andrea Ustero have been talked about for a long time as two possible world number 1s. Yesterday’s was a historic milestone for their career: the young Spaniards won their first title as a pair on the international circuit. They did so in Puebla, Mexico, beating Noa Canovas and Jimena Velasco 6-4 6-0 in a dominating final: Alonso had already lifted the trophy in a FIP Platinum, the highest category tournament of the CUPRA FIP Tour, last year, also in Mexico, but paired with Lucia Sainz. This time the title came with the other half of ‘Las Turkis’: an Andrea Ustero who confirms the Top 10 destiny, and more, of two of the brightest talents of the NextGen of world padel. The Barcelona player already reached the final in the Paris Major last year, paired with Delfi Brea, but in Puebla she wrote a new page in her young but already glorious history. “We played a week at an incredible level – Ustero said –. Congratulations to Noa and ‘Jime’, with whom we are friends, and especially to Ale, who was the real mvp of this final”. “Mexico brings me luck”, added Alonso, who with the points won in the Mexican FIP Platinum 2024 had earned qualification to the Barcelona Finals by joining Ustero herself.

If the women’s final was dominated by Alonso and Ustero, the men’s final saw the second success in three weeks of Tolito Aguirre and Gonza Alfonso who, after winning the FIP Gold in Paredes, also won the FIP Platinum in Puebla. In between, they also lost the final in the Premier Padel P2 in Gijon. It was a very balanced final, which ended before match point for ‘The Magicians’ due to an ankle injury to Alonso Rodriguez, who with young ‘Juani’ Rubini had contributed to the show for the Puebla crowd that filled the Padel State. “We are living a great moment and we want to enjoy it – the words of the winners –. A big hug to Alonso, get well soon”. Padel will continue to take centre stage in Mexico next week, with the Premier Padel P2 in Cancun.
