Day 3. ‘Carburger’ on fire: checkmate of kings Coello and Tapia
March 28, 2025
When Pablo Cardona and Leo Augsburger announced their union for 2025, padel fans knew immediately that there would be another competitive pair capable of challenging the world’s best players. In the Santiago P1 round of 16, the ‘Carburger’ showed all their talent and physical strength, beating FIP number 1 ranked Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia. A victory (7-6 6-4 in one hour and 11’) that confirms the qualities of the Argentine world champion and the young Spaniard, who are now awaiting the quarter-finals against Juan Tello and Tino Libaak (13), who eliminated Paquito Navarro and Lucas Bergamini, with Augsburger then facing another NextGen Albiceleste, with whom, by the way, he won the decisive victory at the FIP World Padel Championships in Doha. Coello and Tapia, on the other hand, failed to reach the final for the second consecutive tournament: this had never happened since Arturito and Agus played together, just as Coello and Tapia had never been eliminated before the semi-finals. In the rematch of the Cancun final, Juan Lebron and Franco Stupaczuk beat Tolito Aguirre and Gonza Alfonso (6-7 6-4 6-2) in a comeback, the same for Coki Nieto and Mike Yanguas (6-7 6-1 6-4) over Alex Ruiz and Alex Chozas. In two sets, however, Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan won over Jairo Bautista and Fran Guerrero. The Santiago tournament is the tournament of surprises: this was confirmed by Victor Ruiz and Xisco Gil’s victory over Martin Di Nenno and Javi Garrido (5).
WOMEN Surprises in the men’s draw, surprises in the women’s draw, with Marina Guinart and Victoria Iglesias beating the number 4 on the draw Marta Ortega and Sofia Araujo in three sets. It was an extraordinary result for the winners of the CUPRA FIP Finals, who will face Ale Alonso and Andrea Ustero (6) in the quarters (on the central starting at 2 p.m. local time, 6 p.m. CET, while on the C2 Shell it will be played from 3 p.m. Santiago time). The top three pairs in the seeding (Josemaria/Sanchez, Brea/Triay and Fernandez/Gonzalez), on the other hand, debuted with a win.
