Day 2. Another Coello wins: first time in a Premier
March 13, 2025
The surname will not have gone unnoticed. Rodrigo Coello, 20, brother of the FIP number 1 ranking, won his first match in a tournament on the Qatar Airways Premier Padel circuit in Cancun: he did so paired with Andres Fernandez Lancha, beating qualifiers Pablo Reina and Antonio Varo 6-3 6-4. For Coello, who had only played one match in the main draw at Premier level (losing in the first round of the P2 in Valladolid last year to Mendez/Rico, paired with Boris Castro), the round of 16 will be against ‘Curro’ Cabeza and David Garcia, winners of the P2 in Gijon. A magical moment for Coello Jr, who only a few days ago had lifted the trophy in the FIP Bronze in Houten (Netherlands).
The crowd at the Rafa Nadal Tennis Center was also thrilled by the two home idols, Diego Arredondo and José Pablo Padilla, who beat Italian Pier Giulio Farabbi and Spanish Jaime Fermosell 6-3 6-4 in their last match on the Cancha Estadio. Thursday, starting at 9 a.m. local time (3 p.m. CET) will be the day of the round of 16, with the big players making their debut: Franco Stupaczuk and Juan Lebron, the number 1 seed in the men’s draw, will face Argentinean lucky losers Manuel Gayone and Axel William Guevara; Tolito Aguirre and Gonza Alfonso will face Manuel Castaño and Nicolas Suescun. But it will also be the day of the debut of the best players in the women’s FIP ranking, with Delfi Brea and Gemma Triay returning to the court after their triumph in Gijon against Virginia Riera and Marta Marrero, as well as Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez, opposing Jimena Velasco and Noa Canovas.
