Road to Barcelona: Alonso returns to the 16, Riera doesn’t give up

The FIP Platinum in Mexico City crowned Ale Alonso, winner of the title paired with Lucia Sainz thanks to success in the final over Virginia Riera and Julieta Bidahorria. A triumph that also changes the situation in the FIP Race leading to the Premier Padel Finals in Barcelona. The young Spanish player, with the 250 points conquered in Mexico, overtook Aranzazu Osoro to return to 16th place in the FIP Race, the last one useful for a place in the Finals.

Alonso, at 3,375, now has a 150-point advantage over the ‘Vikinga’ (number 17 with 3,225 points) and 200 over Virginia Riera (number 18 at 3,175), beaten in the Mexican final but still able to take home 150 points. In the number 19 position, with 285 points to make up on Alonso, is Tamara Icardo (3,090), who was forced to miss several tournaments during 2024 due to injury.

On the doorstep are the GNP Mexico Major (with 2,000 points up for grabs for the winning pairs) and the Milano P1, which will award another 1,000. Alonso will have to continue defending the last place for Barcelona, also because nobody behind is going to give up.
