Day 3: The title ‘race continues’, quarters and semi-finals today
November 22, 2024After the rain, padel is back. The FIP Platinum Mexico has reached the quarter-finals, with 250 points up for grabs in the FIP ranking that could be decisive in the Race to the Premier Padel Finals in Barcelona.
In the men’s draw, seven of the eight seeded players will play the quarter-finals, with Javi Garrido and Lucas Bergamini (1) facing Victor and Javi Ruiz (6) after a 6-1 double to Valenzuela/Hernandez. The Brazilian, number 17 in the Race, needs an overtake to go to the Finals. For the other Ruiz, Alex, and Alex Arroyo (seeded number 2 and respectively number 18 and 19 on the Race), after their 6-2 6-2 wins over Renzo Gabriel and Ivo Agustin Nunez there is a big match in the quarters against Javi Garcia and Pablo Cardona (number 15 on the Race), with three players in the running to go to Barcelona and separated by a few points. Sanyo Gutierrez, number 16 on the Race, is also still hoping for a place in Mexico, paired with José Diestro: for the number 3 seed, who beat Patiniotis/Sager 6-2 7-6 in the round of 16, there are Martinez/Collado, the only non-seeded pair still in the running.
In the women’s draw, Ale Alonso and Lucia Sainz (1) continued their march thanks to a 6-2 6-3 win over Touly/Dominguez: they are Velasco/Canovas (5) in the quarters. Only two games conceded by Virginia Riera and Julieta Bidahorria (2) to Perez/Varo: quarters against Nogueira/Rodriguez (6). Two rounds are scheduled today: in the morning session (Mexican time) all on court for the quarter-finals, while the semifinals will be played in the afternoon.
