What a show on men’s day 3! Here are the quarterfinal matchups
October 30, 2024The first stage of the FIP World Padel Championships in Qatar wraps up with Men’s Day 3 now in the books, after a long day that closed with one of the most exciting and balanced matches of the tournament so far. Portugal and Brazil were the stars of an evening that kept the fans on the edge of their seats until the very last point on Center Court at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha. The prize was first place in Group D, after both teams’ wins on the first two days. In the end, Portugal came out on top, rallying back after dropping the first of the three matches in the tie: Miguel and Nuno Deus evened the score, and then Pedro Perry and Afonso Fazendeiro sealed the decisive point. Finishing at the top of the group brings Portugal to a quarterfinal match against the United Arab Emirates, scheduled for 6 p.m. local time (4 p.m. CET), who finished second in Group B after a 2-1 win over Mexico.
In Group A, Argentina completed the first stage undefeated, clinching another 3-0 victory, this time over Belgium. The “Albiceleste” was led by Stupaczuk/Chingotto, followed by Tapia and Di Nenno, who dropped only one game against their opponents, and the final point was secured by Augsburger/Libaak. The reigning champions advance to the knockout stage without losing a single set; on Thursday, Gabi Reca’s team will face Chile, who were defeated by France today but still finished second in Group C.
The Bleus will also be part of another Group A matchup: after their 3-0 victory over Chile and topping the group, Leygue and team will face Italy (who defeated the USA 3-0 today) in a rematch of last summer’s European Championships, where the Italians defeated the French in the semifinals. Leygue opened the French victory with a 3-0 win alongside Timeo Fonteny, followed by wins from Guichard/Vives and Bergeron/Blanqué. For Italy, the stars were Dominguez/Cremona, Sinicropi/Graziotti, and Patiniotis/Di Giovanni.
Lastly, Spain confirmed their position with a 3-0 victory over Paraguay in their final Group B match: Lebron/Sanz opened the tie on court 4, followed by Nieto/Coello and Navarro/Ruiz to complete the sweep. The European champions now look ahead to their quarterfinal clash with Brazil.
