Day 2: Welcome back Icardo. ‘Chingalan’ ok, Wednesday it’s time for champions

The happiness of picking up the “pala” again after four months, of coming back to the court and winning straight away. It was a special day for Tamara Icardo, currently number 16 in the FIP ranking: a player able, at the start of the season, of reaching a final (in Puerto Cabello) and two semi-finals (in Riyadh and Doha) in the first four tournaments of 2024. Making her debut in the Greenweez Paris Major Premier Padel, paired with Claudia Jensen, Icardo beat qualifiers Marcella Koek and Rebeca Lopez 6-2 6-1 to reach the round of 16 of the third Major of the season. “I’m very happy to be back in the competition, full of enthusiasm and desire to get back on track – said Icardo on social media before the tournament -. And I’m happy to have Claudia by my side: together we will fight with all our strengths”.

 

MEN The day 2 at Roland Garros saw the debut of Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan, the number 2 seed, who will try to challenge the throne of Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia. The ‘Chingalan’ beat 6-2 6-0 Alvaro Cepero and Miguel Benitez. Highlights of day 2 included three-set victories for Federico Mouriño and Marc Quilez over Fernando Belasteguin and Tino Libaak (6-3 6-7 7-5), Ramiro Moyano and Juan Cruz Belluati over Victor Ruiz and Sanyo Gutierrez (6-4 6-7 6-1) and Mario Huete and Facundo Dominguez over Alex Ruiz and Alex Arroyo (2-6 7-6 6-2). Wednesday is the day of the defending champions’ debut: Coello and Tapia, in the second match on the Philippe Chatrier of a schedule starting at 11 a.m. CET, will face qualifiers Simone Cremona (Italy) and Jaime Fermosell (Spain), after the match between Frenchmen Johan Bergeron and Bastien Blanqué against Lucho Capra and Maxi Sanchez (12). Debuts also for Juan Lebron and Martin Di Nenno (3) against Fran Ramirez and Rafa Mendez, for Mike Yanguas and Franco Stupaczuk (4) against José Solano Marmolejo and Ivan Ramirez and for Paquito Navarro and Pablo Cardona (5) against Nachi Sager and Salva Oria.

 

WOMEN Opening the day 3 on court 7 will be women’s FIP number 1 ranked Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez, who will face Marta Borrero and Ana Catarina Nogueira. For Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez, winners of the last Premier Padel circuit tournament played (in Valladolid), close on the same court against Noa Canovas and Jimena Velasco. They will be preceded by Marta Ortega and Sofia Araujo (3) against Sofia Saiz and Marina Lobo. On Philippe Chatrier, however, space will be given to French players: Lea Godallier with Italian Giorgia Marchetti against Sara Ruiz Soto and Carla Mesa and Alix Collombon with Spanish Araceli Martinez against Nuria Rodriguez and Carolina Orsi.
