Top seeds meet expectations in Budapest
September 3, 2024It was a day of expectations met for the top-seeded teams at the FIP Juniors European Padel Championships, currently taking place in Budapest, Hungary. The boys’ Day 2 concluded with convincing victories for Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Belgium, all winning 3-0 in their respective ties. “La Roja” defeated Germany and now has 4 points in Group A, tied with France (3-0 against Switzerland), whom they will face tomorrow at 4 PM. Portugal overcame Norway and is preparing for the crucial Group B match against Sweden, who today defeated Austria. It was also an easy round for Italy against Estonia, with the “Azzurri” set to face Lithuania on Wednesday. On the other side, Lithuanians won 2-1 against Hungary, after their defeat on the first day. Finally, after beating Denmark, Belgium will face the Netherlands (2-1 against Finland on Day 2) in a match that will decide the top spot in Group D. Two points are awarded for a tie victory, while one point goes to the losing teams.
GIRLS The top seeds in the women’s tournament also had an easy start: Spain defeated Germany 3-0 and now has 2 points in Group A, the same as Germany and the Netherlands, with the latter set to face the reigning champions tomorrow. In Group B, Sweden secured a straightforward 3-0 victory over Estonia, earning their first two points, trailing Estonia (3 points) as they await tomorrow’s tie at 9 AM against the host team, Hungary (1 point).
Italy also had a strong start in Group C, with a 3-0 victory over Czechia. The Italians are now tied on points with Belgium (who rested today), against whom they will compete in tomorrow’s tie for the top spot in the group. Lastly, France debuted smoothly, securing a solid 3-0 win over Finland. Tomorrow, they face a great match against Portugal, who also has 2 points like “Les Bleues,” in a duel that will determine the Group D winner.
