July 22, 2024
On the first day of the FIP European Padel Championships, the four top seeds of the women’s tournament did not falter. In Group A, reigning champion Spain defeated Lithuania 3-0, losing only 5 games across three matches: 6-0 6-0 by Marta Ortega and Jessica Castelló, 6-1 6-0 by Andrea Ustero and Ale Alonso, and 6-0 6-4 by Bea Caldera and Lorena Rufo. In Group A, Denmark also performed well with a 3-0 win over Switzerland.
In Group B, France also achieved a 3-0 victory over Poland, with the Bleues doing even better than Spain by conceding only 3 games in the three matches of the tie; a good debut as well for Portugal, which defeated Belgium 3-0, but with two marathon matches, those won by Ribeiro/Nogueira and Araujo/Dias. Italy, the hosts, also had a successful debut in Group C with a 3-0 win over Finland; Germany, on the other hand, defeated Hungary 2-1.
In Group D, finally, there were double 3-0 wins by Sweden over Great Britain and the Netherlands over Estonia, with the Oranje, like France, conceding only three games in three matches. Tomorrow at 9 AM at TC Cagliari, the second day will begin, which could already see the first verdicts with the top seeds aiming for a spot in the quarterfinals.
