Betclic Bordeaux Premier Padel P2, day 5. Gonzalez, Ruiz, Nieto, Sanz, Virseda: so many debuts in the final
June 15, 2024Momo Gonzalez and Alex Ruiz and Coki Nieto and Jon Sanz all reached their first final on the Premier Padel circuit. At the Betclic Bordeaux Premier Padel P2, the two Spanish pairs – respectively seeded number 3 and 5 in the men’s draw – won their respective semifinals and will compete for the title on Sunday. But it will also be a first in the women’s draw for Veronica Virseda, paired with Marta Ortega: standing between them and the title will be Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez, in the hunt for their second trophy in a row after Santiago.
MEN They call him ‘Captain America’. But it was in France that Alex Ruiz, paired with Momo Gonzalez, earned the first final of his career on the Premier Padel circuit. A final, that of the Betclic Bordeaux Premier Padel P2, which comes three days after his 30th birthday. Ruiz therefore gave himself the best possible present in front of his family, and he also did so for his partner Momo, beating number 1 seed Fernando Belasteguin and Juan Tello 6-4 3-6 7-6 in two hours and 14 minutes. A victory that already seemed certain at the start of the decisive tiebreak (4-0), but came back into question thanks to the Argentine’s comeback (four match points cancelled). In the end, however, it was Gonzalez (number 14 in the FIP ranking) and Ruiz (number 15) who prevailed. Also celebrating were Coki Nieto and Jon Sanz, who in the last match of the schedule beat Brazilian Lucas Bergamini and Spanish Pablo Cardona, the tournament’s number 7 seed. Nieto and Sanz lost 7-4 in the first set tie-break, but then prevailed with a double 6-2 in two hours.
WOMEN In the women’s draw, the top two pairs in the seeding reach the final. On the one hand, Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez (1), who, as happened in Santiago in the previous tournament of the season, beat Lucia Sainz and Patty Llaguno (5): it ended 6-3 6-2 in one hour and 26 minutes, with Triay/Fernandez who will have the chance to play for their second title in a row. Standing between number 3 and number 9 in the FIP ranking and the trophy are Marta Ortega and Veronica Virseda, both in their first final of the season (for Virseda it is also her first final on the Premier Padel circuit). Ortega/Virseda, in the first semifinal, had beaten Virginia Riera and Sofia Araujo 6-1 7-5 in two hours and 8 minutes, in a two-sided match that lasted two hours and 8 minutes. Ortega, in her career, has won one Premier Padel title, last year in Rome, paired with one of tomorrow’s opponents, Gemma Triay.
