Sevilla Premier Padel P2, day 3. Zapata-Goenaga sit at the stars’ table
May 2, 2024Every Premier Padel tournament gives the stage to a new pair. At the Estadio de la Cartuja, it was the turn of Teodoro Zapata, number 42 in the FIP ranking, and Enrique Goenaga, who followed his partner by one position: Zapata and Goenaga, the only non-seeded pair at the Sevilla Premier Padel P2, qualified for the quarter-finals – the best result of the season – by defeating in three sets and at the end of a battle that lasted two hours and 36 minutes (7-6 5-7 6-3) Fernando Belasteguin and Juan Tello, the number 5 seeded pair. For Zapata and Goenaga, on Friday, there is the challenge to Franco Stupaczuk and Martin Di Nenno (4): the Superpibes won a very complicated match against Edu Alonso and Alex Arroyo, who were defeated 6-4 4-6 6-4. The other favourite pairs are all there: Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia, winners of three of the five Premier Padel tournaments played so far, suffered through one set (with 10 break points conceded) before beating 7-5 6-3 Nachi Sager and Salva Oria, who had been stopped (by withdrawal) in the semi-finals in Riyadh, also against Coello/Tapia, who will now face Mike Yanguas and Javi Garrido (6), who ended the adventure in La Cartuja of Lucho Capra and Alex Chozas. The task of Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan (4) was easier, thanks to a 6-1 6-2 victory over Fernandez/Barahona (Maxi Sanchez and Sanyo Gutierrez are now in the quarters), while one of the most interesting matches of the day was won by Paquito Navarro and Juan Lebron, thanks to a 6-3 7-6 victory over Tino Libaak and Leo Augsburger. In the quarters, Paquito and Lebron find Momo Gonzalez and Alex Ruiz (7).
WOMEN If in the men’’s draw one of the round of 16 ended with the victory of the non-seeded pair, in the women’s draw the strongest players lived up to expectations. Victories in two sets for Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez (6-3 6-1 over Barrera/Caparros), for Delfi Brea and Bea Gonzalez (6-3 7-5 with some difficulties over the very young Alonso/Ustero) and Tamara Icardo and Ale Salazar (6-0 6-2 over Rodriguez/Rodriguez Abajo); on the other hand, number 3 seed Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez needed the third set to beat Zazu Osoro and Carmen Goenaga, Enrique’s sister. Marta Ortega and Veronica Virseda (5) took two hours and 39’ to defeat Rufo/Caldera (4-6 6-2 7-6); Virginia Riera and Sofia Araujo (7) needed even two hours and 50′, before coming back 3-6 7-6 6-1 against Collombon/Bidahorria.
