Asunción Premier Padel P2, the grand final. Brilliant Claudia Fernandez: will she win the first title?
May 19, 2024At the ueno SND Arena, it was another incredible day, with the Paraguayan public cheering for four semi-finals, each one more beautiful than the last. Playing for the title in the Asunción Premier Padel P2 will be Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia (1) against Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan (2) in the men’s, Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez (3) against Delfi Brea and Bea Gonzalez (2) in the women’s. For Chingotto/Galan and Brea/Gonzalez, therefore, the chance to continue their winning streak: ‘Chingalan’ for the third title in a row, Bea&Brea for the fourth.
MEN In the first of the two semi-finals, Chingotto and Galan came back from a one-set down against Franco Stupaczuk and Martin Di Nenno (4) in a rematch of the Sevilla final. After 6-3 to the ‘Superpibes’, however, Fede and Ale upped the quality of their game, conceding only four games in the next two sets and closing 3-6 6-2 6-2 in one hour and 47 minutes. Trying to stop the run of Chingotto and Galan, in their fourth final in four tournaments played as a pair, will be Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia, winners of three Premier Padel titles and last to beat Chingotto/Galan, in the Puerto Cabello final. Coello and Tapia also needed three sets to beat Paquito Navarro and Juan Lebron, who had a perfect first set and closed 6-2. The second, however, lasted only 17 minutes, dominated by the number 1 on the draw (6-0). Balance and show in the third, with Navarro and Lebron having two match points at 5-4, before losing serve in the next game and handing (2-6 6-0 7-5) the final to Coello and Tapia.
WOMEN Fifteenth victory in a row for Delfi Brea and Bea Gonzalez, the number two seed in the Asunción Premier Padel P2. The 6-2 7-5 win over Marta Ortega and Veronica Virseda (5) earned the number 3 and 4 in the FIP ranking the fifth final of the season, with the chance to win their fourth consecutive title. Trying to stop the unstoppable run of Delfi and Bea will be Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez, who won the third act of the semifinal ‘trilogy’ against Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez. The ranking and draw number 1s lost 7-5 4-6 6-4 at the end of a beautiful match that lasted two hours and 58 minutes, with seven breaks in 12 games in the first set and a match that rewarded an impressive performance by the 18-year-old Fernandez, who after two finals lost (in Doha and Brussels) is looking for the first Premier Padel title of her life (Triay already won it last year in Rome).
The finals will begin at 16:00 local time, 22:00 CET: starting with Triay/Fernandez against Brea/Gonzalez, then Coello/Tapia against Chingotto/Galan.
