Lotto Brussels Premier P2, day 3. Gemma’s flight among the NextGen: thrills and show
April 25, 2024Eight out of eight. The seeded players in the women’s draw of the Lotto Brussels Premier P2 make an en plein and gain access to the quarterfinals scheduled for Friday in the Belgian capital. Good debuts for FIP ranking number 1 Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez, who beat 6-2 6-2 Ariadna Cañellas and Teresa Navarro; even better still for Delfi Brea and Bea Gonzalez (2), who beat 6-0 6-2 Alix Collombon and Julieta Bidahorria. Gemma Triay (no. 3 of the FIP ranking) and young talent Claudia Fernandez (3) had to play three sets before beating 6-0 5-7 6-3 other two young talents like Alejandra Alonso and Andrea Ustero. Finally Alejandra Salazar and Sofia Araujo (4), in the round of 16, defeated 6-3 6-2 Ana Catarina Nogueira and Marta Talavan. These are the challenges on Friday: Josemaria/Sanchez-Castelló/Jensen, Sainz/Llaguno-Triay/Fernandez, Salazar/Icardo-Riera/Araujo, Brea/Gonzalez-Ortega/Virseda.
MEN The surprises in the men’s draw are Pablo Garcia (number 97 in the FIP ranking) and Emilio Chamero (111), who defeated two legends such as Maxi Sanchez and Sanyo Gutierrez – the number 7 seed – with a double tiebreak, as well as the eternal Miguel Lamperti and Juan Cruz Belluati, who beat Momo Gonzalez and Alex Ruiz (6) in three tiebreaks (7-6 6-7 7-6). If Garcia and Chamero will now take on Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan (3), who gave up only three games (6-0 6-3) to Gonzalo Rubio and Jairo Bautista, Lamperti/Cruz Belluati will face Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia (1), in the quarters thanks to a 6-3 5-7 6-4 victory over Lucho Capra and Alex Chozas after a beautiful match. The other quarter-final in the bottom half will be that between Juan Lebron and Paquito Navarro (6-2 6-3 to Javi Ruiz and Pablo Cardona) and the pair formed by Coki Nieto and Jon Sanz (8), who had already won their round of 16 on Wednesday evening. At the top half, ‘Superpibes’ Franco Stupaczuk (no.6 of the FIP ranking) and Martin Di Nenno (no. 5) (6-0 6-4 to Moyano/Gil) will compete against Mike Yanguas and Javi Garrido, who needed three sets (6-3 3-6 6-2) to defeat Javi Leal and Lucas Campagnolo.
