GNP Mexico P1, day 2: the magical 2024 of Santigosa, two FIP Rise and now the round of 16 against Lebron-Galan
March 21, 2024Every tournament on the Premier Padel circuit has its own fairy tale. In Acapulco it is the turn of Daniel Santigosa, 20, who has already won two CUPRA FIP Tour titles in this 2024, both in Gothenburg (Sweden), and who last year won two gold medals at the European Games in Krakow with the Spanish national team: having started from the qualifiers paired with Miguel Gonzalez, in the second round of the GNP Mexico P1 he defeated 6-2 6-3 Victor Ruiz and Lucas Bergamini (9), earning the big challenge with Juan Lebron and Ale Galan (2), who needed to win back a set from Bautista/Munoz by closing 2-6 6-3 6-4. Nothing to do for Monterrey 2022 Premier Padel champion Fernando Belasteguin, who was beaten in tandem with Lucho Capra (seeded number 6) by Garcia/Barahona. Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia (7-5 6-1 to Ramirez/Garcia) won their debut match (and one set of suffering); Stupaczuk/Di Nenno (3) qualified more easily for the round of 16, giving up just two games (6-1 6-1) to Gutierrez/Ruiz. Two as the games conceded by Doha finalists Mike Yanguas and Javi Garrido (7) to Perino/Chozas.
WOMEN Two sets were also enough for the women’s No. 1 Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez, whose 6-1 6-3 win over Arruabarrena/Casali moved them into the round of 16, as did Ana Catarina Nogueira and Bea Caldera in Doha. Delfi Brea and Bea Gonzalez (2) defeated Borrero/Fassio 6-3 6-2 and will now face Araceli Martinez and Sara Ruiz Soto. The eight seeds in the GNP Mexico P1 have all won: today (it starts at 11am Mexican time, 6 pm CET) the round of 16 will start on the GNP Arena with the young Alonso/Ustero against Ortega/Virseda (4) and on the Cancha Sheckers with Canovas/Velasco against Riera/Araujo (6).
