GNP Mexico P1, day 1. Women’s top seeds get off to a strong start
March 20, 2024If the world‘s best players, during the media day, expressed many words of thanks to the organisation for having put them in the best conditions to play after Hurricane Otis hit Acapulco in October, on the first day of the GNP Mexico P1 the first results arrived. In the women’s draw, some of the world’s strongest pairs have already taken the court. Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez (3), in their second tournament together after losing the final in Doha, gave up only three games to Barrera/Caparros (6-2 6-1), but good wins also came for the other top seeds Salazar/Icardo (double 6-1 to Collombon-Bidahorria), Castelló/Jensen (6-3 6-1 to Navarro/Guinart) and Sainz/Llaguno (6-1 6-1 to Arellano/Vivancos). Today will be the day, among others, for the debuts of the two-time champions of this early season Ari Sanchez and Paula Josemaria (third match on the centre court against Arruabarrena/Casali) and for Delfina Brea and Bea Gonzalez, second match of the evening session against Borrero/Fassio.
MEN Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia, for the first time number 1 seed in a Premier Padel draw, will debut (and it will be the first match of the evening session starting at 5pm Mexican time, midnight CET) against Ivan Ramirez and Pablo Garcia, respectively number 37 and 100 in the FIP ranking, who defeated Valdes/Mendez 2-6 6-3 6-3 in the first round. In the same half of the draw, the young Argentine qualifiers Libaak/Augsburger also did well (6-3 6-0 to Mexican wild cards Montoya/Padilla). Juan Lebron and Ale Galan, in their last tournament together, will debut on the Cancha Caliente MX against Jairo Bautista and Jaime Munoz (double 6-3 over Marcos-Alba). The other defending champion in a Mexican Premier Padel level, Fernando Belasteguin, will also be on the court: the Argentine legend, who won in Monterrey in 2022 paired with Arturo Coello, will play with Lucho Capra against Garcia/Barahona.
