FIP Promotion Cairo, Wakim wins at home, Gibson-Canivell fairy tale in women’s draw

An Egyptian wins in Egypt. Georges Wakim, paired with Dutchman Thijs Roper, won the FIP Promotion Cairo, beating 6-4 6-1 in the final the Spaniards Ferran Gonzalez Zamorano and Diego Dorta Diaz, a pair who were not among the seeded players and who had eliminated the number 1 seed Seurin/Raichman in the semifinals.

Among the women, however, it was Britain’s Aimee Gibson and Spain’s Paula Canivell Varona who won. If for Gibson it is the first FIP title in her career, for Canivell it is the end of a tunnel after her knee injury: “The goal I had set for this season was to return to competing at a good level, but I never imagined that I would win the first tournament that would bring me back to competition. This time has been long and hard, but hard work, perseverance and daily effort lead you to triumphs like this that make all the sacrifice worthwhile”.
