Day 5 Lebron-Galan, the last dance is a final

Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia will try to spoil Juan Lebron and Ale Galan’s last ‘dance’. From the P2 in Puerto Cabello, the two Spaniards will be opponents (Galan will play in Venezuela with Fede Chingotto, Lebron with Momo Gonzalez), but today they hope to end their wonderful journey with a title, that of the GNP Mexico P1 in Acapulco. It would be their second in the 2024 Premier Padel, after the one they won in Riyadh against Coello/Tapia, who instead lifted the trophy in the Ooredoo Qatar Major. Lebron and Galan, in two hours and 35 minutes, defeated the ‘Superpibes’ Franco Stupaczuk and Martin Di Nenno (3) with a score of 7-6 2-6 6-2; the Argentinians thus missed their appointment with the first final of the season, with Lebron and Galan doing well to regain the lead after losing the second set. Coello and Tapia, on the other hand, secured their third final in three tournaments on the Mexican night thanks to a 6-3 7-5 win in one hour and 23 minutes over Paquito Navarro and Sanyo Gutierrez (4).

WOMEN If the men’s tournament lived up to predictions – as the number 1 and number 2 on the entry list will face each other in the final –, the women’s final will see the number 6 (Virginia Riera and Sofia Araujo) and number 7 (Jessica Castelló and Claudia Jensen) seeds against each other. The wonderful adventure of Alejandra Alonso and Andrea Ustero ended in the semifinals, after 4-6 6-1 6-4 by Riera/Araujo also due to a physical problem suffered by Alonso in the third set. But a very young player will still be in the final: it is Claudia Jensen, who will be 19 years old on 21 July, and who, paired with Jessica Castelló, defeated Delfina Brea and Bea Gonzalez in two hours and 4 minutes with a score of 7-5 6-3. After the two titles in 2024 by Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez and the four in 2023 divided between Brea/Gonzalez (2), Josemaria/Sanchez and Triay/Ortega (one each), Premier Padel will therefore have two new queens.

On the GNP Arena, play will start at 5 p.m. Mexican time (midnight CET) with the women’s final, followed by the men’s final.
