it’s party time for Chingotto-Yanguas Carraro: “One of the most beautiful tournaments in the history of the CUPRA FIP Tour”
October 8, 2023The strongest, the most awaited, those with the highest ranking won. The FIP PLATINUM Sardegna crowned Federico Chingotto and Mike Yanguas, in a Sunday that will remain in the history of Italian padel and of the island. In a sold-out TC Cagliari, the Argentinean and the Spaniard beat in two sets (6-3 6-4 in one hour and 10 minutes) Francisco Manuel Gil and Ramiro Moyano, who had reached the final as number 5 seeded players. One fact made the difference throughout the match, that of the break points: while Chingotto and Yanguas broke their opponents in the only two chances they had, Gil and Moyano failed to convert four break points. And against a pair as strong, as that formed by the number 9 and number 22 in the ranking (200 points for both with this victory), it is forbidden to make mistakes.
A final, but above all a celebration. During the match, there was not a free seat in the stands of the TC Cagliari Centre Court. After the trophy ceremony, however, everyone on the court to celebrate Chingotto and Yanguas, stormed – as had happened yesterday after the semi-final – for a photo or an autograph. Yanguas’ promise makes it clear just how special a week the champions have had: “We will definitely be back next year”, says the man who plays with Fernando Belasteguin on the tour. “I’m happy to have won with ‘Chingo’, he is a great player. I want to thank the fans and my family, it was an incredible week”. The presence of Chingotto and Yanguas, two world top players, a few days before the start of the FIP PLATINUM Sardegna, had been extraordinary news for the tournament promoted by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, Department of Tourism, Handicraft and Trade, under the patronage of the Cagliari municipality. And to those who wondered about the feeling between Chingotto and Yanguas, the two winners replied with a trophy. “I’m happy because it all started very recently with Mike”, said Chingotto, who is usually paired with Paquito Navarro. “We won an important tournament, coming here without expecting too much: that is why we are even happier. I thank my family and my girlfriend, who has been with me for all this week”.
And who knows if one day the stars of the FIP PLATINUM Sardegna might not return to Cagliari as tourists. “We are happy to have hosted them this week, we hope to have them back with us soon”, said Gianni Chessa, the Sardinian Region’s Councillor for Tourism, Crafts and Commerce. “Sardinia has confirmed itself as the island of sport. We have experienced great moments of padel, we were the first to believe in this sport, we brought it to the island some time ago and it has grown so much here in recent years, to the point that Sardinia is the region with the most padel courts in this part of 2023, we are facing a growth of 23% compared to the national average of 20%. My thanks, on behalf of myself and all Sardinians, go to the players and all those who contributed to the success of the event”.
Great satisfaction was also expressed by the president of the International Padel Federation, Luigi Carraro: “Normally, to resume a great event in a single word is impossible. Except in the case of the FIP PLATINUM Sardegna, which we can sum up in a single adjective: extraordinary. Extraordinary was the level of the great champions who put on a show here in Cagliari for an equally extraordinary audience. And extraordinary is the location for one of the most beautiful tournaments in the history of the CUPRA FIP Tour. From a technical point of view, Chingotto and Yanguas, Lucia Sainz and Patty Llaguno and many other champions have said they want to come back and play here next year and this is the best thermometer of the great success of this event”.
