July 22, 2023From Rome to Madrid. The final of the Madrid P1 Premier will be the same as the final of the BNL Italy Major Premier Padel. One week after Foro Italico, number 3 against number 4 seed, Fede Chingotto and Paquito Navarro against Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia. Both winning pairs had lost the first set of their respective semi-finals, but both overturned the result. Two beautiful games, which deserved the ovation of the Madrid audience. Chingotto and Navarro were the first reach the final, defeating 6-7 6-1 6-3 Momo Gonzalez and Sanyo Gutierrez. The first set was evenly balanced, decided at the tiebreak: Gonzalez and Gutierrez won it, with Fede and Paquito not letting up. After dominating the second set, however, it was again Momo and Sanyo who got off to a better start in the third, going up 3-0. Break by Chingotto and Navarro in the fifth game and another break in the seventh to go 4-3. Gonzalez, however, was forced to take a medical time-out due to a problem with his left leg, which penalised him in the final games of a match in which Momo and Gutierrez still made a total of 56 unforced errors. “I never get tired of saying it, playing in this arena is something wonderful,’ Navarro said -. We will give it our all, I promise”. Chingotto congratulated Paquito: “When he plays like that, he is an animal. I just have to follow him”.
The second semi-final was even more hard-fought, with Coello and Tapia beating 3-6 6-2 7-5 Maxi Sanchez and Luciano Capra in two hours and 16 minutes, but they had an extraordinary tournament in which they defeated Lebron and Galan, world n. 1, in the round of 16. The match, however, had started badly for the Rome champions, who lost the first set. In the second, however, the true version of Arturo and Agustin was seen, before an impressive third set, a real padel spot. The decisive break came in the 11th game with a great reverse shot by Tapia, who gave two break points, the first of which was converted thanks to a volley at the net by Sanchez. Tapia went to serve for the match, the Argentine saved two match points, even had a ball to go to the tiebreak, before Coello and Tapia celebrated. “We saw a great version of Maxi and Lucho” – confessed the only Spaniard on the court, congratulating his opponents –. In the second set we recovered our level, while the third was a great game”. “We are tired but happy – continued Tapia –. We are well, we have confidence, and we recovered from a difficult match. We are ready for the final”.
