Foro Italico, immediately a surprise: Gonzalez-Gutierrez eliminated!
July 12, 2023The BNL Italy Major Premier Padel gets into full swing, with matches putting at stake the qualification to the Round of 16 and the debut of all the big names of the discipline, who arrived at Foro Italico for the Roman Major full of enthusiasm and desire to win.
The morning session of the men’s draw immediately produced a big surprise. Round of 16 proved in fact fatal to Gonzalez-Gutierrez, seeded number 7 in the tournament: the pair composed by the veteran Lamperti, 45 years old in November, and the Italian-Argentine Perino repeated their debut success and won with a score of 7-6, 6-4. Predictions were fulfilled in the other three matches, where the seeded players prevailed to go through the Round of 16. Two set wins for Bergamini-Ruiz (11), finalists at Premier P1 in Milan, and Sanchez-Capra (9); the Argentine pair Stupaczuk-Di Nenno – second favorite of the tournament – needed instead three tight sets to beat the Spaniards Diestro-Leal in a comeback win (4-6, 6-3, 7-6), closing 10-8 in the decisive tie-break at the third match-point after unbelievably saving one to their opponents.
In the women’s draw, a more than convincing debut for the No. 2 seeded pair, Gemma Triay and Maria Ortega. The Spaniards gave up just three games to compatriots Carmen Castillon and Nuria Viviancos, defeated by the score of 6-1, 6-2. At the end of the match “focus” was the main word for the two winners, with Triay greeting the Centre Court audience in Italian: “It’s a pleasure to be here playing in Italy, we are waiting for you tomorrow!“. Round of 16 qualification for seeded players in the other three morning matches: Lobo and Rufo Ortiz (15) prevailed in three sets, while Martinez-Goenaga (13) and Collombon-Iglesias (10) were two-set winners.
